Thanking our legionnaires for their service

Carlos Guzman Media Counselor Where would the Boys State of Kansas program be without all of those yellow shirts?  These men are the program’s advisors and many of them are also members of the American Legion.  The legionnaires are veterans who have volunteered one week of their time to ensure that the program ran smoothly and efficiently. These men, who have already done so much for their nation, state, and community, continue to provide selfless service to all involved with Boys State.  Since these men have already served others much more than what could ever be asked of them, why do they continue to come back to Boys State year after year? Don Thomson (Army) said “It is the highlight of my year.  I’m surrounded by positive people and a positive environment.  It’s heartwarming and makes me feel good to see the enthusiasm of the young men.”  Larry Andrews (Air Force) may have retired from the service, but not from servicing others.  “[Boys State] is an American Legion program.  I think that it is the legionnaires’ responsibility to support it as much as they can.” Don Peters (National Guard/Army Reserve) returns every year [caption id="attachment_298" align="alignright" width="300"]Don Thomson Don Thomson[/caption] [caption id="attachment_299" align="alignleft" width="300"]Larry Andrews Larry Andrews[/caption] [caption id="attachment_300" align="alignright" width="300"]Dr. Bennett Radford (left) and Don Peters (right) Dr. Bennett Radford (left) and Don Peters (right)[/caption] because “I get ten times more out of it than what I put into it.”  Dr. Bennett Radford (Army) said “I have always enjoyed serving other people.  I consider it somewhat of a mission.  I enjoy one on one conversations with the staters that come into the medical office.” Though the 78th session of Boys State of Kansas is coming to a close, we are fortunate enough to know that our incredible legionnaires will be back next year.  Boys State may be over, but when they return home, they will continue to inspire and serve others.  This is Carlos Guzman officially signing off.  Thank you to all staters, staff, and legionnaires for making this week truly unforgettable.]]>
